Who are the head coaches & coordinators? What schools are they from? The Senior Bowl has always been political with not always the best players playing. The coaches always make sure "their guys" make it. The year my son "tried out" over 20 of the players on the team were from the 2 teams the coaching staffs were from. A couple of years before, Centennials head coach at the time resigned because he found out the team was already predetermid before the tryouts even started. He told us all about it after the tryouts. Just a cash grab for Football Alberta to put these kids through the try out process for nothing. Pretty distasteful actually.
So many kids won't even bother to go to the tryouts anymore. I mean who's the last kid from Raymond to play in the Senior Bowl? I can't remember if the Ralph cousins did. If they did they might be the only ones all decade... What really ticks me off is that there are kids in the Senior Bowl that don't need the exposure since they've already been recruited and signed their LOI but there are other kids that haven't gotten a sniff due to the small school stigma that gets placed on them. The North roster has a lot more variety. Kids from Grande Prairie to Fort Mac to Lloydminster to Sylvan Lake suiting up next to the Edmonton kids. Maybe it's time to expand the rosters if for nothing else to just give the kids a chance to show their stuff at the practices/testing day.
Score update: Into the second quarter and it's 10-0 North. [hr] Apparently the South D stepped up and took one to the house. Anybody confirm? 10-7 North with about 4 minutes to go in the half.
Hey Rids, watch for an up & comer at qb named Chris Merchant from Western High School. He will be a senior this fall. He & Boston Rowe are the two AB qbs for the U18 team this summer. The guy carrried the Falcons on his back this midget season. This is a team that went 0-6 in 2011. Now they were 4-2 or 5-1 & he had some great games... Very athletic qb. Not only can he play qb but he can placekick & punt.
Already selling him to schools in the States. Fun to watch the development of some of these kids. First saw him as a grade 9 player. [hr] Game over! North wins it 23-15. Waiting on stats from the game. Sure is different than a decade or more ago when players were going to the Senior Bowl to showcase themselves for universities and now 75 to 80% of the players at Senior Bowl were already committed to schools.
Feel sorry for the kids that deserved to be there but weren't for political reasons. Not every player DESERVES to be in that game. But that has been already mentioned. [hr] For the North South game there should be four qbs per team to play that game. Each qb gets a quarter. Or if 4 is too much then three. Every qb plays a quarter & a little bit more. After all, this is about showcasing talent, not entire football programs. Or bullshit biases that coaches carry against certain players & schools they may coach against. And somebody don't tell me that Football AB can't afford to make the team rosters larger, with the $$ FA takes in, they can easily afford to do that. I can understand a restricted roster like the U18 as it is expensive to travel but not the North South game.
Here's an article from the Senior Bowl. Great work by the Edmonton Journal to get it up there so quickly. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/L ... story.html
