Brander Craighead - 3 year starter at UTEP with a SR season left to play. Possible NFL interest but if he comes to the CFL he could be a tackle.

Ben D'Aguilar - Early talk had him as a Top 3 Draft Pick. Invites to two NFL mini camps could delay his appearance in Calgary.

Brett Jones - Perhaps the smartest player in the draft. Could be a starting OG this year. Has med school dreams which need to be discussed.

Yannick Morin-Plante - The fastest receiver in the draft. Could push Forzani.

Charlie Power - Okotoks prospect, played defense his first two years at U of S but drafted as a receiver. Part of the change in the Draft rules, 4 years after enrollment would place him in the 2014 Draft Class.

Shane Bergman - A monster of a man at 354 lbs. Also plays rugby!

Dumitru Ionita - Left Concordia University. Was a little inconsistent there. Not sure why they drafted a kicker.

Does Craighead have another year left in school?

Does this make him exempt from the expansion draft?

    In a word, "yes":

In John Hufnagel’s mind, the fine art of the game plan is not limited to the action between the lines.
Kickoff to the 2013 season is 53 days away, but the Calgary Stampeders head coach/general manager made a shrewd play Monday by selecting offensive tackle Brander Craighead from the University of Texas at El Paso in the first round (seventh overall) of the CFL draft.

Hufnagel clearly states he did not want his first pick taken by Ottawa in the December expansion draft, and this one can't be...

This expansion situation really pisses me off as a fan. Yeah, yeah, I heard it all before how Ottawa needs a decent team for their fans & to get off to a good start on the field & at the gate but really when teams have to draft pre-emptively to avoid losing a player less than a year later to Ottawa then something is wrong with that picture. Instead of drafting for need we drafted to prevent losing a player. Look at our qb situation, we are all worried we are going to lose BLM to Ottawa aren't we??? If Huff is smart he'll keep Kevin Glenn around as bait for Ottawa so both Tate & BLM won't get chosen. Being allowed to protect only one qb in the expansion draft is so much BS. If Marcel Desjardins is this great GM that everyone claims he is then prove it by going out, build Ottawa with shrewd draft picks, trades & free agent signings.

Don't think any expansion team is going to select a mid-30s QB so Glenn isn't really bait.

If Tate plays the whole year then Calgary will protect him and Bo Levi will still be a prospect with upside but not expansion team material either.

If Tate gets injured again the Bo Levi gets his year and a QB with injury problems doesn't look like expansion team material either.

Remember once Ottawa selects a Stampeder then the team gets to protect another half dozen.

I think Edmonton has a lot more to worry about when it comes to losing a QB in the expansion draft with Nichols and Reilly.

Further security in case of Ottawa selecting a CGY kicker, either Paredes or Maver...

Is it security to draft a guy who was noted as "inconsistent" as a kicker and also flunked out of school?

There's a few more options out there for the RedBlacks aren't there? Is Austin Anderson still with Indianapolis?

One can never be so sure. Huff is preparing for a "just in case" scenario. I think it is a smart move. If Ottawa takes Maver, Ionita can punt while Paredes will placekick. If Ottawa takes Paredes, Maver to placekick and Ionita to punt.

You have a kicker in this draft who has potential for a strong leg to punt, might be inconsistent but here is what Forde had to say about him...

    - Dumitru Ionita (K/P, Concordia/Twin Cities Predators): strong-legged kicker led the CIS in punting in 2010 before leaving school; impressed at the National Invitational Combine

Not sure who will be available next year so better to get a potential asset now when you know what is available.

It's only a just in case scenario if they keep him on the roster all year. If they sign him and release him then Ottawa could still pick Maver or Parades plus sign Ionita too.

    Available next year:

    Zachary Medeiros (K, Montreal)
    Tyler Crapigna (K, McMaster)

As well as it should be the draft year for Ollie Thompson but that probably isn't as clear cut as it appears the CFL Draft rules are changing again.

Ionita is a boom or bust kicker but by that I mean boom or bust on each kick. He led in average yards per punt but a 60 yard punt followed by a 20 yard punt is still a 40 yard average. Now that was 3 years ago. We'll see if things are different this year if he comes to camp.

Love how we develop the players & Ottawa steals them. Not other teams fault the fans in Ottawa can't support their football teams. Seriously, I will be ranting about this crap until after the draft everytime Ottawa comes up.

Exactly Rids. Glenn would be 35 or 36 if he took a snap during Ottawa's first training camp. He'll either be out of football or he'll be an available journeyman. Other guys that won't have to worry about Ottawa drafting them - Buck Pierce, Kerry Joseph, Obby Khan, Steven Jyles, AC Calvillo, Tracey Ham.

Interesting you mention Don Jonas here. I've been researching the Continental Football League lately and here you go bringing up double CFL guys!
