When it comes to the quarterback position, John Hufnagel has seen it all.
Five decades playing the position or coaching it leaves little to the imagination.
But heading into his seventh training camp as GM/head coach of the Calgary Stampeders, Hufnagel is bracing himself for a first: An open quarterback competition.
Hufnagel arrived in Calgary prior to the 2008 season with Henry Burris entrenched under centre, a spot he’d remain for four more seasons until Drew Tate was deemed ready to remove the label of future franchise quarterback and run with the title of present-day franchise pivot.
Prior to both the ’12 and ’13 seasons, Tate was the man in the winter and the spring, only to melt down in the summer heat — Week 2 injuries to his non-throwing shoulder and right forearm/elbow derailed his two campaigns as the heir apparent — and force the Stamps to turn elsewhere.
