A cagey veteran of eight Canadian Football League seasons, Drew Tate has learned a thing or two about life north of the 49th parallel.

Drawing on that experience, the quarterback drove 26 hours straight in mid-April from Denton, Texas to punter Rob Maver’s house in Marda Loop in hopes of getting a jump on securing temporary accommodations for the season.
Calgary has the lowest rental vacancy rate in Canada at a mere one per cent.

“Guys are trying to find places right now, and they can’t find anything,” Tate says. “I’ve got a place, a one-bedroom downtown. It was really the only place I could find.

“Everyone wants a one-year lease. And this place, it was like, `hey, when do you want to move in? When do you want to move out?’

“Lucky” is not a term anyone would use to describe Tate over the last two seasons with the Stampeders. Declared the heir apparent to Henry Burris in 2012, Tate proceeded to dislocate his shoulder in Week 2. He returned for the final game of the regular season and played (admirably) in the Western semifinal, only to dislocate his right forearm.

In 2013, after a winter of martial arts training designed to prevent injury, Tate suffered a strained right forearm/inflamed elbow in Week 2 that sidelined him for almost three months and relegated him to backup status behind Kevin Glenn.

With Glenn a disgruntled member of the expansion Ottawa Red Blacks, Tate is once again in the mix to start at quarterback for the Calgary Stampeders (along with Bo Levi Mitchell and newcomer Adrian McPherson.)
