So Edmonton has fired a teacher for giving students that don't give a crap a zero for the assignments that they didn't turn in. Here's some insight on their policy...

    EPSB notes from June 2006 - http://www.epsb.ca/board/june13_06/item06.pdf

Maybe instead of taking risks with their learning they should just complete the work? I know when I was in school there were occasions when I ignored the assignment worth 10 marks in favor of focusing on an assignment worth 100 marks but I sure didn't expect to receive a token grade on the assignment I failed to complete.

I find that they are devaluing the worth of a high school diploma.

Reading between the lines of the official policy it shows a lot of pushing kids through to get them through. I'll be honest here and say that this is what happened in Memphis. They would push kids along to the next grade so they didn't have to deal with them, we're talking about kids with a 100 absents moving up! Alberta Ed needs to step in and do a correction on this or it'll get worse not better for them.

It's been a steady decline ever since they scrapped the Advanced Diploma and it took a sharp turn south when they auto-corrected the titles of the classes from being Math 33 to Math 30-Applied. Let's bring in Tim Hortons to give all high school students a medal just for being signed up (since apparently just being there isn't even a requirement!).

This news should make everyone with a job feel sorry for all those who have to supervise, manage or otherwise deal with this next crop of work force participants. Better go to the dollar store and buy extra gold stars because these kids have no idea what it's like to accomplish anything without them.
