Can't forget the locals who are currently sitting in playoff contention as well as their Manitoban counterparts. See which team goes the furthest.

Jets are still trying to build a contender. Last 25 games will be the tell for 2015. They'll need spectacular goal-tending in 18 of those games by Hutchinson to nab a playoff berth. All is smiles and candy floss in the peg after Evanka Kane traded out for a nice packet of players, developmental guys and a 1st rd pick. However, if the team gets blown by Detroit tonite - I'd say they're no better than 40/60 to nab the last wildcard berth.
If they beat Detroit and show their typical hardassed control hockey they're 50-50 or better!
Jets have a tendency to make a lot of Junior B goaltenders look like Jacques Plante - just not enough touch around the net - and when they go up against a monster (like Pekka Rinne) they tend to shot for the outside of the post, assuming their weak shots won't be able to find twine between the posts. Its a terribly defeatist assumption but the shooters on the Jets aren't exactly true NHL snipers -
Andrew Ladd - the ultimate plodder
Blake Wheeler - a speedball who tends to wipe out every second rush
Brian Little - a solid second line NHL centre, who's being forced into first line duty. He's the best touch guy on the team.
Mark Schiefele - only 7 goals (that's less than the mope Kane), he's been snake-bit. But too easily moved off the puck and doesn't have the Jet legs of guys like Crosby, McDavid, Stamkos, etc.
Byfuglian - this big bugger has been moved back 'n forth from forward to d. Nice to have a big physical presence out there. And he's got some nifty touch around the net for a 6'5", 265 lb. monster
Matthieu Perreault - best FA signing in the league - nearing 20 goals, should end up with 25 to 28. Much more offered than the gassed finn Jokinen.
Jacob Trouba - looked like money from the get-go but struggling recently. Still a chance to be a career #1 or #2 d-man on this team (but not a faux #1 like DeeDee Phaneuf)
Great coach in Maurice as the guy never gets too high or too low!

Sending Kane out of town was probably the best move of the year for the Jets.

I was starting to think Chevy would be fortunate just to pass away the mope's contract for a high 2nd round pick. Getting what he got (throwing in Bogosian hurts a tad but Bogo was never gonna be more than a 6 goal scorer as he couldn't get the knack of getting the puck thru from point; half decent positionally but nothing super special).
For the trade to go Buffalo's way Kane has to suddenly morph into a 30 to 40 goal scorer (he was on pace for 16 in Wpg) and be like that for 5 to 7 years.
However, even if he does he was just going to be an unhappy mope in Wpg, there to do the minimum and collect his 5.5 million cheque. I did like his hussle 'n flow - Maurice seeing the kid didn't have a natural scorer's touch was trying to transition him into a vicious fast-skating rat (like Marchand). Only problem - you don't pay rats 5.5 million and Marchand has 15 goals compared to Evanka's 10)

Even if Stafford turns into a rental and Tyler Myers only evolves into a durable #4 or #5 d-man there's still the promise of The Big Finn, Junior Lemieux and of course the first round pick (somewhere #24 to #29)

If Kane continues to mope with that terribly errant shot and poor passing the Jets could win SUPER BIG, especially if Stafford re-ups for a reasonable figure, Myers develops into our #2 or #3 d-man, Lemieux makes the team as a gritty 3rd or 4th liner and Finnish Joel supplies depth to the Jets farm. The draft pick gives the Jets two in the first round. Craig Button calls the jets the team with the best prospects in NHL. Kinda over-doing it, I'd say.... but valid in the sense Josh Morrissey, Nik Ehlers, Nic Petan, etc. could be NHL bound next season or the one after.

Another benefit is it gives a terrified of trading GM another piece or two to offer for even more skill/depth this year prior to trade deadline. Might make the most conservative GM in hockey into a trading wild man!!!

Jets win a slobber-nokker (great game actually) in a lengthy shootout. Newcomer Drew Stafford scores the only goal in the shootout for the win. That Wheeler has no chance of scoring. TRADE 'EM CHEVY! YOU THE MAN!!!

Four weeks to go in the season and it's down to the wire for both teams.

Jets look pretty much in after their thrashing of the Habs last night.

Flames will have to fight to the finish.

My bad. I forgot about the wild card status. Jets only 3 pts ahead of Calgary. Two weeks to go.

The lowly oilers may have just done their Canadian counterparts the biggest favor by knocking the kings on the verge of playoff extinction.

More than that, the Oilarz may just have done a huge favour to the entire league (since nobody outside of Los Angeles County really wanted to see the Kings back at the dance knowing the havoc they can wreak on everyone else...).

    Thanks for that, Oilarz! :D

Who knew you had that in you? :p

Big game tonight in the dome. Flames looking to dethrone the kings of their Stanley cup crown.

Way to go Flames. You dashed LA's dream of a repeat and by the same token helped the jets clinch as well.

Canucks-Flames in the first round. An all too rare all Canadian series.

Awfully proud of a Flames club who, in only the second season of their rebuild, weren't given much credit in the pre-season by most observers (Aaron Ward excepted ;)), and who were almost universally conceded a bottom three pick in the Western Conference, if not in the entire NHL.

I gotta say you've come a long way, baby!

    "Yeah baby!", indeed...:D

appropriate that the flames should visit the jets Saturday before their quest for the cup. Winnipeg has been waiting 19 years for a playoff game. The white-out is back.

Congrats to the Flames on clinching a playoff berth. Who would have thought they'd reach 97 points in a rebuilding year?

Congrats also to the Jets on their playoff spot.

Congrats to the Oilers for finishing out of the playoffs yet again, for the 9th year in a row. It seems rebuilding takes longer in Edmonton. :)
