Pat Steinberg really is an underrated columnist isn't he. This was a very intelligent piece.

And he's right, this really is a tough decision. I actually really like what Stempniak brings to the table. Generally he just plays a quiet two way game but every now and then he gets on ridiculous point streaks. To me that's a bonus for a veteran player at a cap hit less than $2M. I would argue that he was actually a more effective player than Alex Tanguay was last year.

If the team decides to go young this year (and they should), he's a guy I'd consider keeping around as veteran presence for a few more years, especially if Iginla is moved. I mean there's really not much out there on the free agent market this year that's going to give you better value and he wants to come back.

What do you think, re-sign him or let him walk?

These aren't tough decisions. The Flames roster is full of guys like this. Time to get younger, cheaper & have more talent. We all know this except Jay Feaster, Ken King & Murray Edwards.
