We're scheduled to be in the Federal Hill section ("the Italian Quarter") of Providence, Rhode Island this Sunday afternoon where they hold a parade, and the celebrations around the Columbus Day weekend are highlighted with banners, food, and music.

Our oldest daughter, who's studying in a Masters of Architecture program there, said she didn't want to join us.

    Now I know why.

The Rhode Island School of Design is a progressive Ivy League institution, and it steadfastly refuses to recognize Columbus Day.

On Monday, it's classes as usual for all students.

I knew her school ignored the holiday.

I just didn't know precisely what their reasons were.

    I do now.

I think we'll be taking a pass on the holiday ourselves.

And, anyway, as loyal Canucks, we've always got our own Thanksgiving to celebrate.

Even if it's in New England. ;)
