    Preseason Week A - Game 3
    Winnipeg @ Montreal
    Date: Wednesday June 13th
    Time: 7:00 local
TV/Radio: No TV / CJOB (Winnipeg) / CJAD (Montreal)

Since I'm a time zone ahead of you guys it's actually game day here already while you suckers still have 11 minutes to reach this point.

It will be interesting to see what type of roster that Winnipeg will bring to town. Their bonus is that the drop off from QB1 to QB3 isn't as drastic as some teams. Speaking of QBs Montreal will be wondering just what they have behind Calvillo and McPherson. Word is that Scott Riddle (Elon) will get some quality time but most CIS fans will be interested in how many snaps Kyle Quinlan (McMaster) and Kyle Graves (Acadia) get. Noel Devine (West Virginia) will be another rookie of note for Les Larks.

Winnipeg has posted a depth chart already for the game - http://www.bluebombers.com/depthchart/game/depthid/9629 which shows no Buck Pierce or Chris Garrett or Kito Poblah or Carl Volny or Cory Watson on offense. They do have the big trees listed in Ty Pencer, Justin Sorensen, and Paul Swiston.

    Local ties -
Winnipeg - Paul Swiston (Dinos), Anthony Woodson (Dinos), Cassidy Doneff (Cochrane)

Montreal - Reed Alexander (Dinos), Bryn Roy (Delamead), Curtis Dublanko (Leduc)

Plop-drops (Lapolice) was forced to used his 'big trees' (aka Swiston, Pencer, Sorenson) when Andre Douglas fell on his hip during routine ST drills the second day of camp (initially Douglas said its no worries, and team management as per the form chart said the same thing) but its obvious somewhat serious. The Bum squad also lost Glen 'Don' January a bit later so their plans for twin-tower import OTs has been temporarily derailed. Jan & Douglas weren't gonna see more than a half of ball anyways so it forces Plop to play the tree-boys more than he'd like.

If our o-line can block anything (or Montreal tosses in some weaklings on D) expect to see some amazing things from Chad Simpson and Chris Garrett (our import RBs)

Winnipeg's defense will be their strength (again) with Timbo Burke fielding a nice rotation of A & B ballers (A & B = Assault & Battery)

Biggest dropdown will be to see how canucks Pierre Marc Luc Labbe and Enos Muambo fare as our new middle linebackers.

We'll also see what kind of legs Loverboy (Mike Reno) and Wilbur bring to the table - not expecting much actually.

This promises to be the sloppiest of the 4 first week matches, especially after AC is extracted and the canuck QBs try running the Als offense. No Buck Pierce tonite, but the other Bomber QBs are all experienced men. Bomber offensive woes will be directly related to execution and performance of o-line.

Als should run rampshod on the visitors tonite but they won't. Can't run on full octane with 5 canuck QBs and lots of new players rostered.

Als 23 - Bomber 13 (Als D will probably score at least 10 of their points off Bomber turnovers)

Doug Brown is debuting tonite as pre-game and post-game host but as per CJOB rules they don't travel a color man. Just Hall of Famer Bob Irving and his notepad, tape recorder and spectacles. Irving usually picks up ex CFL'r James "Duke" Ellingson who I used to listen to on a sports talk show out of Ottawa - Duke was paired with the legendary "Dandyman" who was fired for something stupid.

Brown would be a natural colour man on the broadcasts but man, is CJOB ever cheap. Irving having to team with a local area guy somewhere in the booth. When did CJOB start doing this?

Approx. 4 or 5 years ago. Funny, too cuz TSN1290 made a super pitch for Bomber radio rites and their bid was actually higher than CJOB's (they wanted it bad) and included a travelling contingent of either two or three guys (one of whom would be the play by play man). However, CJOB was run by Garth Buchko, who later would become CEO of the Bombers.

Might think the 'fix was in' if I didn't believe in those darn conspiracy theories.......:D

Basically, the cost of sending an extra man -
Return airfare (if you continue to be a homer) - $500
    1 night hotel room - $100
    Food & beverage (breakfast, lunch, 2 suppers - $250
    Tips, gratuities - $ 50
Stipend to colorman (I'm guessing here) - $250

Total expenses for one game $1150.00

Is that too much for a travelling commentator when you're grossing about $500,000 to $700,000 on your bomber broadcasts?

And remember, CJOB still has to pay guys like Ellingson for driving in from Ottawa, a pre-game meal, and a stipend for doing the game - probably around $400 total. . . . thus they're only really saving about $700 a game if my figures are close (which they always are)

So, how many more years does old man Calvillo have in him?

The guy is a pro and he knows how to condense his deficienices (ie. running speed, durability, blows to head, etc.)
He doesn't BuckPierce in the pocket for that extra second anymore and doesn't appear willing to collide with vicious d-bs and lbs - his QBing is confined to his experience, his accurate arm, reading of defenses, leadership, etc. He might be 40 but health wise he's much younger.

Of course one hellacious hit to the hat and he's probably done!

If anyone is listening to Bob Irving on www.cjob.com it appears Bob is having a rough evening, reading numbers, getting some gameflow going, working with Ellison. However, Irving at his worst is still better than Rod Black or Bryan 'The Edmonton Madmouth' Hall at their best!

Another run to daylight be Boi Deroiyze, the bombers 3rd import RB.

With the bombers supposedly feeble offense scoring almost at will, I'm sure Marc Andre Trestman is casting some austere glances in the direction of The Tarnished Angel, Jeff Reinbold.....

Doug Brown is gonna have fun with the post-game show. He's sitting back in the studio in Wpg and can't see the game. Has to go on Irving & Ellingson's cloudy commentary...... should be fun!

Bombers with a pretty solid road game. Looking forward to how the chopping block hits both of these teams.

Irving said the biggest problem for the bombers tonite was holding onto the pigskin. Way too many fumbles, even though they recovered most of them. Sometimes that effort fumble isn't worth it - and too many fumbles are produced when some hick tries to play hero and gain an extra .5 to 1 yard.....NOT WORTH THE TURNOVER!!!

Two Eastern confrence teams playing in the pre-season.

    Meh.

I listened for 45 minutes or so and didn't really hear anything spectacular.

I have no use for Jeff Reinebold as he nearly ran the Bombers into the ground as a Head Coach & just about put the Bombers out of business literally & figuratively 15 years ago. Apparently at the time, all you needed to do in 1996 to impress former Bomber General Manager Ken Bishop was to come in to your interview with a great Powerpoint presentation & laser pointer. Gee thanks, Mr. Bishop. What did Bomber fans do to deserve both you & Reinebold? Now, Reinebold's in Montreal coordinating the defense. He's all yours Marc. You hired him.

I assure you Marc Andre Trestman didn't consult me on the Reinbold hire!!!:-/

Legend has it Reinbold dazzled the sleepy bomber tall foreheads with a powerpoint computer presentation (the bombers had to scramble to find a computer with a cd-rom), it was that new back then!

And the funniest part - Reinbold had worked as a coffee-fetch for Dick Vermiel (legendary NFL coach) during a summer camp, somehow got into the coach's room and cribbed (copied) Vermiel's resume (on cd-rom). He then edited a copy of the cd-rom taking out references to Vermiel and inserting his own name. Nuff said - he got the job!
