Tom Higgins has resigned from his position with the league effective immediately:

TORONTO, Ontario - The CFL is in need of a new director of officiating.
The league announced Thursday that Tom Higgins is leaving that post effective immediately.
"It's our understanding Tom intends to seek a position on the competitive side of football, as a coach, general manager or administrator," CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said in a statement. "We thank him for his efforts and wish him the very best in his future endeavours."

Looks like one of the clubs is about to announce a new hire...;)

Apparently Tom was fired before the Grey Cup and they are just putting the information out there now. He even had to make appearances during Grey Cup week without talking about it.

Here's an article which appeared this morning with Higgins attempting set the record straight:

Higgins annoyed by notion he 'quit'

Tom Higgins threw a flag Friday on the Canadian Football League head office for misrepresenting the circumstances surrounding his sudden departure as director of officiating.
“It was made to look like I chose to leave and that I had something to go to that was imminent,” Higgins said Friday from his home in Calgary. “And that’s not the case.
“I’m now a complete free agent.”

So he certainly wasn't leaving to pursue something waiting for him with one of the teams as the league's release had implied. :shifty:

I'm left to wonder whether Hufnagel will consider him for one of the vacancies sure to open up after Rick Campbell's departure (since Campbell is expected to look back at Calgary to fill some of his own coaching vacancies in Ottawa)...

Wouldn't be surprised to see him land in BC in some respect.

And, after 24 years as an on-field official, and having worked 11 Grey Cups, Glen Johnson gets Higgins' job:

Glen Johnson new CFL VP of Officiating

Veteran head referee Glen Johnson is the Canadian Football League's new vice-president, officiating.

The Winnipeg native retired Monday after 24 years as an official to assume the position with the league's head office. He replaces Tom Higgins, whose contract wasn't renewed.

Maybe he can drum some sense into Jake Ireland's head...;)

Jake Ireland is way past his best before date. Good appointment the guy has lots of experience that he can bring to the job. As far as Tom goes I would not be surprised to see him stay right here in cowtown. Huff is going to need good coaches and Tom has always been a good football coach.

Ah it looks like ole plop will be the one landing in the land of granola as the new OC as per TSN

Bronko's new moniker likely to be 'Wallyplop' ball.

Nope. Looks more like Plop will be staying nice and snug at TSN while Mark Washington is likely to replace Stubler.

Higgins = the height of human boredom; even Cohon ditching him from league duty was boring.

As opposed to the frenetic and often peripetitic Plop....

Guess, Pasquale couldn't quite up the ante enough to fund Plop and his wife Tina Fay. TSN is guaranteed money, fairly non-stress and gives him a far bigger national profile than being a regional assistant. Gonna miss this boy on the sidelines, thats for sure.

His 17-29 lifetime record will stand as a testament of excellence in the face of ineptness.
