News has been very quiet on the Jerome Messam front, although the RB did send out a tweet earlier in the week stating he'd like to stick with the Stamps and forego free agency.

Jerome joined 770 to talk about the situation.

What are your thoughts? Will the Stampeders see the value in Messam and ante up?

I'm sure the deal will get done with Messam...Huff just has a few more priority signing to deal with first....

With Jon Cornish finally put to rest - the Stamps need a big bugger running back who can knock down DBs, regular sized linebackers and the odd under-sized d-lineman. Doesn't quite have the speed or power of Cornish but he's fairly powerful and has matured into a legit CFL player. Could have 2, maybe 3 years left in the tank.
Cornish basically succumbed to a couple concussions and found it unsafe to be on a pro football field.

Keep crossing those fingers and toes Stamps Fans.

Calgary Stampeders hope they're close to deal with Jerome Messam

Close only counts when it comes to horseshoes and hand grenades.

Being in the vicinity, oftentimes, does not get contracts done in CFL free agency.

The Calgary Stampeders and prized free-agent running back Jerome Messam, according to sources, are close to a deal that would keep the 6-foot-3, 245-lb., running back in Red & White, but not close enough to get the 30-year-old’s signature on a contract.

“Ongoing,” Stamps GM John Hufnagel said of negotiations.

“I think that we’re at a point where a deal could possibly get done before free agency, but it may not happen until during free agency.

“ I’ve had multiple communications with his agent over the past week.”

With the free-agent market set to open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning, there’s not much time left for the two sides to meet in the middle.

Lawless ranks the biggest prizes in FA as #1 Teddy Laurent and #2 Jerome Messam/Andrew Harris

He thinks offers for Laurent might top out near $300,000/anum.

    Amazing money for a non-import ratio-breaker!

Bombers expressing interest in Laurent but alas, I'm afraid they're just going to be used as negotiating fodder!

Laurent is a monster - he'd make the bomber d instantly legit - especially with Westerman by his side but I'm afraid Wadzillus Mastermind will never go above $240k - after getting nicked by Moore and burned outright by a downtrodden Picard.

With Laurent & Westerman you could put an American hobo at one DE spot ($55 to $65k) and a decent reserve import or canuck on the other side and you'd still have a superb o-line. Impossible to double team both Westerman and Laurent. In the old days bombers were so vapidly horrible opponents routinely quadruple teamed Doug Brown but the other 11 bombers couldn't dominate the remaining 8 opponents.

This could be a game-changer if it comes to fruition. Nahhh, I'm just dreaming!

Calgary Stampeders general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce the re-signing of national running back Jerome Messam.

Messam was scheduled to become a free agent tomorrow.

The 30-year-old Toronto product joined the Stampeders in an Oct. 14, 2015, trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and he appeared in two regular-season games for Calgary, registering 180 rushing yards — including 121 in his debut for the Red and White — and adding six receptions for 33 yards. In 17 combined games for the Stampeders and Roughriders, he rushed for 1,006 yards and two touchdowns and made 53 catches for 497 yards while earning West Division all-star honours.

Messam also started both of Calgary’s playoff games and amassed 122 rushing yards and a touchdown and eight catches for 126 yards.

“Jerome is a very good football player who fit in very well with the Stampeders after we traded for him last year,” said Hufnagel. “I believe this is a mutually beneficial situation for both the player and the team and I’m pleased that Jerome has chosen to continue his career with the Stampeders.”

In 90 career games for BC, Edmonton, Montreal, Sasktchewan and Calgary, Messam has 3,270 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns as well as 132 catches for 1,329 yards.

“I’m happy to get the deal done and not have to worry about free agency,” said Messam. “I’m excited to be back in Calgary.”
