CALGARY STAMPEDER PRACTISE NOTES, SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

+Calgary Stampeders streak of rain-free days ended today!
+team felt the first drops of rain in roughly three month
+workout took place in cool, drizzly conditions
+Stampeders added DB Joel Ross to the roster
+he was with the team in training camp and had an interception in the first pre-season game
+DB Patrick Levels did much of the work of DB Tommie Campbell
+SB Kamar Jordan did some individual work today, but will no dress vs BC. Likely vs SK next week.

ITEM: CSEC stops negotiations with city on new arena.

ANALYSIS: The headline should really read CSEC won't negotiate until new council sworn in---hopefully---without Nenshi.

CSEC has been villified and sneered at long enough by Mayor Nenshi, during their various discussions on a new arena.

Then, suddenly there they were, being used as a prop for his re-election bid! Look! Shiny new arena! Entertainment district! Very convenient by His Purpleness.

Do I think there will be facility talks, post-election? Absolutely. The Flames are more profitable in Calgary than anywhere else.

However, tired of being talked down to and with talks going nowhere, CSEC decided to strike. They waited until their key, influential supporters gathered for the annual golf tournament. And, by some remarkable coincidence, NHL leader Gary Bettman popped into town.

It's bare-knuckle politics and the stakes, for the Flames, are very high.

Maybe higher for Nenshi. He now faces the possibility of being known as the Guy-Who-Chased-The-Flames away. Quite a legacy!

    More chapters to come!

    OPINION: MUM ON MCMAHON

With an election looming and poll numbers dropping, I see Mayor Sneershi is launching a charm offensive.

Part of the offensive is to suddenly announce a hockey arena might not be all that bad an idea. No more snark, telling Gary Bettman to go cool his heels. Apparently, an arena could work. Not sure where this enthusiasm was for the last three and three quarter years, but I am sure you can see the motivation.

Left out of his comments was any discussion of McMahon Stadium. I have no idea what kind of upgrades---if any---are being contemplated. However, this might be the time to put a little public pressure on him. The World's Greatest Mayor (as voted by some Euro-lefty club) may be feeling a little heat and realizes he needs to listen to actual voters, not just city hall bureaucrats.

Time to bring this to his attention!

DEADLINE: CFL announces trade deadline. Set your watches! It is October 11 at 1.59 pm MT
