Open competition for Stamps starting QB job
Hufnagel says No. 1 pivot will be decided in training camp

John Hufnagel refuses to engage in a pity party over a string of five years of regular-season success turned into playoff heartbreak for his Calgary Stampeders.

“We’re going to try to keep knocking on the door and opening it,” the head coach/general manager pledged Wednesday as the sun broke through the clouds over McMahon Stadium. “You just can’t give up. You’ve got to work harder and hopefully get into the playoffs again and play better football.”

Since winning the Grey Cup in 2008, the Stampeders have played excellent football — bordering on dominant — during the 18-game regular season. In fact, no team — East or West — has a better record during that time span.

But in spite of such overwhelming potential, the Stamps have repeatedly failed to close the deal in the post-season — a fact that gnaws at the man in charge.

“It’s forever lingering,” the longest-serving head coach on the three-down circuit said of the latest gut-kicker, a 35-14 loss in the 2013 West final against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. “But you’ve got to put it past you and move on. The players, I’m sure, did the same thing.

“You’re always looking in the mirror at woulda, coulda, shoulda, but it’s a new season.”

"The players, I'm sure, did the same thing" says Hufnagel.

I'm sure of that, too, Coach.

In fact, from their play, many of 'em before the game even reached half-time.

As you can plainly see, the cold weather wasn't the only thing bitter about that game...;)

That game needs to serve as a reminder of what could have been. Being the perennial regular season champs doesn’t mean jack. We ran rough shot over the whole league and ended up sitting at home watching the Riders, who were able to FINISH games, win the Grey Cup. Until this team can slay the dragon, that is the Roughriders in the playoffs, we will always be the underachievers who can’t win when it counts.

2014 needs to be about playing 4 quarters of football, each and every week.
