    The quiver in Ron Rooke’s voice gives way to a laugh when talk turns to the Calgary Stampeders van his father spent so many hours volunteering in.

    Forever decked out in Stampeders garb from head to toe, Doug Rooke was the CFL team’s white-haired welcome wagon, shuttling young hopefuls to and from the airport throughout training camp every year.

    His was the first face players saw as they entered Canada. His was also the last mug they’d see after having their pro football dreams end with a compassionate return trip to Calgary International.

    “He volunteered until he was 89 and just loved driving that van,” said Rooke, reflecting on the life of his “best friend,” which ended peacefully Monday at age 95.
