It wasn’t the first touchdown of Bo Levi Mitchell’s professional football career that made him feel truly comfortable on Thursday night at Molson Stadium in Montreal.Nor was it the fake field-goal play he executed to rush for 10 yards and a first down in the third quarter of the Stamps’ crushing 33-32 loss to the Montreal Alouettes.

In fact, it was the hit he took at the end of that play, courtesy of Alouettes defensive back Wopamo Osaisai, that ironically gave the Stamps’ rookie No. 2 quarterback the sense that he belonged.

“There wasn’t anything to get over (in terms of a mental hurdle as a rookie), but the comfort level is definitely there now,” said the 22-year-old Mitchell, the youngest quarterback on an active roster in the Canadian Football League.

“I think the main thing for anybody is just getting hit one time. You want to get in there and get hit. It clears all the butterflies, clears your mind, you’re just ready to go. Once I finally got hit on the fake field goal, it felt good.”

Mitchell entered Thursday’s game with a little more pressure on his shoulders.

Surgery for Drew Tate would be a ‘last resort’

Drew Tate’s left shoulder appears to be the most scrutinized body part in the Canadian Football League.

But there’s still some doubt about exactly what’s going to happen with it a week after he dislocated it against the Toronto Argonauts at the Rogers Centre.

Stamps coach and general manager John Hufnagel didn’t disagree with a suggestion on Wednesday that Tate would face five to six weeks on the sidelines — a similar stretch to the one he faced in 2011 when he injured the same shoulder in a pre-season contest in Edmonton, forcing him to miss the first five games of the regular season.

Stamps roadtrip to forget

Kevin Glenn can throw strikes.

He proved that during an unplanned relief appearance at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

He proved it again during a gutsy second-half performance at Percival Molson Stadium in Montreal.

In between games, he proved it at a team bowling outing in Kingston, Ont.

Unfortunately, the savvy signal-caller and his Calgary Stampeders teammates struck out on their nine-day, two-game road-trip, returning home after back-to-back gut-wrenching defeats by a grand total of four points.

If the satellite TV was working on Friday’s WestJet flight back to Calgary, Glenn probably wanted to avoid the morning sports shows, especially the highlights of a last-minute 33-32 loss to the Montreal Alouettes the previous night.

With starter Drew Tate sidelined with a dislocated left shoulder, the Stampeders’ supposed-to-be-backup quarterback cobbled together four scoring drives in the back half of Thursday’s showdown to erase a halftime deficit and give his guys the lead.

But it was all spoiled by a late interception by Jerald Brown that gift-wrapped the game-winning touchdown for the Alouettes.

“I just wish we could’ve had that last one back,” Glenn told reporters during an emotional post-game scrum.
