Bauer never one to back down

Lyle Bauer sits in the stands, as he usually does, with his sunglasses on and feet up watching the Calgary Stampeders practice at McMahon Stadium.

Today is a good day.

That day in late 2004 was not.

But the Calgary Stampeders president and chief operating officer is proud to say it’s been seven and a half years since he was diagnosed with throat cancer — the same type of cancer that took one of the Canadian Football League’s brothers, Greg Mohns, at age 62 earlier this week — and he expresses, often, how thankful he is to be living, walking, and breathing.

“I’m good,” he says, smiling warmly in the sunshine just days before the B.C. Lions arrive. “It’s been seven and a half-years post-treatment. It’s been a little bit tough these past few days (with the passing of Mohns).

Media 101: Heap praise on your opponent

Slotback Nik Lewis kicked off the official love-in Friday for the visiting B.C. Lions.

One by one, Lewis and his fellow Calgary Stampeders sang the words on the choir sheet precisely as scripted

“They’re a really good defence,” Lewis said of the pumpkin patch denizens set to invade McMahon Stadium tonight. “They’ve got great tackles. Great ends. Keron Williams is a great defensive end. Korey Banks and the back end, they’re all veterans.

“They all know what they’re doing.

Remember the good (or bad) old days of Lewis popping off pre-game about all the inadequacies — real and imagined — of the opposition?

At the grizzled age of 30, Lewis has come to learn the wisdom of killing the other guys with kindness.

Buono embraces new role

One by one, the legends of the Canadian Football League keep disappearing into the good night.

Bobby Ackles, Ron Lancaster, Cal Murphy, and this week, the enigmatic Greg Mohns. All characters. All, in their own way, larger than life.

All essential to the fabric of this crazy three-down circuit that has somehow survived against all odds to witness the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup.

“It’s always awakening to see someone who is in your era, who is your age, pass away,” says Wally Buono, general manager and vice-president of football operations for the B.C. Lions. “When you’re 22 and someone 62 dies, you say, ‘Well, he was 62.’

QB Kevin Glenn — Initially brought in to back up Drew Tate, the 12-year CFL veteran was suddenly thrust into the spotlight when the cool Texan went down with a shoulder injury. He earned the trust of his teammates in a thrilling 41-38 comeback victory, going 27-of-42 for 385 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Glenn needs to continue that momentum against B.C.

2012 stats: 4 GP, 71-for-100 passing, 863 yards, 6 TDs, 31 yards rushing.

DB Quincy Butler — Quietly going about his day-to-day business, Butler certainly has proved he can make noise on the field. After absolutely flattening Weston Dressler last week against Saskatchewan for what arguably was the hit of the game. Against B.C., he’ll be faced with the task of stopping Geroy Simon, Andrew Harris, and Co., which won’t be a walk in the park

Stamps target Lulay

The Calgary Stampeders feel the best way to beat Travis Lulay is to put the B.C. Lions quarterback in his place.

Then they have to keep him there.

In less than two full seasons as a starting CFL quarterback, the Montana State product has become one of those players defences fear and respect.

So when the Stamps face the Lions Saturday at McMahon Stadium (7 p.m.), the main focus for the home side will be to keep him contained.

If that’s possible.

“You need to keep this guy in the pocket,” defensive end Chris McCoy said. “When you get this guy out of the pocket, that’s when he’s at his best. We have to keep him in the pocket and make things uncomfortable for him.

“A lot of guys get out of the pocket and don’t do too well. When he gets outside, that’s when he makes big plays.”

Lewis tips hat

Sometimes old dogs don’t need to learn new tricks.

Especially if they’re still the top dogs.

B.C. Lions star Geroy Simon certainly fits in that category.

The CFL’s all-time leading receiver — with 15,339 yards and counting — is still getting it done at age 36.

“People will say I’m supposed to slow down because I’m 36,” said Simon, who broke Milt Stegall’s yardage record earlier this season.

“But the way I train —

I train to be explosive and fast. So, I’m not planning on slowing down anytime soon.

“Eventually, it’ll happen. But I’m trying to hold off that process.”

Stamps receiver Nik Lewis, in his ninth CFL campaign, is putting together one of the finest seasons of his career.

He and Simon have had their verbal battles over the years.

But all that remains from those earlier spats appears to be a mutual respect.

Tad bit ready

Tad Kornegay signs a free-agent deal to give an ailing secondary some veteran depth and immediately faces his former team.

With knowledge of the opposition offence, Kornegay helps his new club get a much-needed victory in the West Division playoff race.

Those two paragraphs could describe what could happen to the veteran defensive back this week.

It’s also the same thing that happened a year ago when Kornegay joined the B.C. Lions just a week after being cut by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Lions released Kornegay after he helped them win the Grey Cup in November, so he was available when the Stamps had some injuries to their secondary.
