A lot of faces are the same, but the place seems much different to Maurice Price.

Maybe that has a lot to with where he keeps his stuff.

Back in 2009, the smooth receiver had a two-month stint with the Calgary Stampeders but never got into the lineup.

As a practice-roster player, his locker was a shelf that was wheeled into the middle of the room.

Right after that season, the locker-room facility was completely renovated to state-of-the-art specifications.

“It’s good to be back,” said Price, who participated in Stamps ‘rookie camp’ the past two days. “It’s nice to have an opportunity. I like what they did with the place. It wasn’t quite like this back in 2009.”

Rookie DBs duel for spots

If Eric Fraser gets hurt during a game this season, the Calgary Stampeders will probably need a capable Canadian to come in and fill his shoes.

At this point, the two players vying for the spot behind Fraser — should he win the starting job — are both coming off injuries last season that basically ended their CFL campaigns.

But Keenan MacDougall and Andre Clarke have taken different paths to the CFL.

Clarke was with the Stamps a year ago during training camp and was performing well.

On one play, he went to grab an interception, came down awkwardly on one leg and severely sprained his ankle.

He is still classed as a rookie, but Matt Walter is feeling anything but in his second crack at winning a job with the Calgary Stampeders.

The former Bishop O’Byrne Bobcat and University of Calgary Dino, who completed his university career last fall as the Dinos’ all-time leading rusher, found himself in a comfort zone the moment he took to the field for Thursday morning’s opening session of rookie camp at McMahon Stadium, and will carry the same attitude into Sunday’s 9:05 a.m. main camp debut at McMahon.

Another Ralph poised for CFL career

He’s more than a decade younger and perhaps an inch shorter then his brother, and wears a different jersey number, but there was little doubt that the young man catching footballs with a veteran’s poise at Calgary Stampeders rookie camp this week was a Ralph.

Two years after big brother Brett retired in the prime of his Canadian Football League career, Jimmy Ralph is starting down the road to a football career as a non-roster player with the Stampeders, showing off the same sure hands and crisp route-running as his brother.

The 19-year-old receiver, who starred (as did brothers Brett and Brock, another longtime CFL player) at Raymond High School, hopes to take the same route blazed by Johnny Forzani a few years ago, practising with the Stamps while suiting up with the junior Calgary Colts in hopes of securing a U.S. college scholarship.

Price catching more than just passes

Maurice Price recalled the surroundings, the league, and even some of the players.

However, the 26-year-old Orlando native did not remember how tough Calgary’s air is on a guy’s lungs after training at sea level for months.

Price, who spent some time on the Stampeders practice roster back in 2009, has been sucking wind at McMahon Stadium during the team’s 2012 three-day rookie camp.

“Man, it’s HARD,” said the friendly Floridian after Friday’s morning session. “More than anything, that’s something I’ll have to get used to. It’s hard to breathe, it’s hard to catch your breath.

“It feels like your lungs have literally left you. I’m just trying to get used to that and hopefully soon.”

With both Henry Burris and Joffrey Reynolds officially out of the picture in Calgary, two new eras are set to begin in the Stampeders’ offensive backfield.

Yes, Drew Tate is the new starting quarterback for the Stamps, and Cornish will no longer have to worry about a future hall of famer breathing down his neck. These are both stories that have been well publicized throughout the course of the off-season.

No longer will Tate be out of focus on the sidelines, no, now Tate is the main man in Calgary.

Following an impressive audition at the end of last season and in the playoffs, Tate assumes the mantle of the Stampeders’ starting quarterback.

Does he have any concerns about taking over the most visible spot on the field?

“Itching. Just itching to get back,” sad Tate in a recent interview.

Training camp primer

On Sunday morning, the battles begin. Rookie camp is done, and the Calgary Stampeders freshmen — plus a few veterans and head coach John Hufnagel — went to Medicine Hat Saturday to spread the word about the team.

There are a few new faces at the key positions, but the Stamps will have a team that has a lot of familiarity among the names at the starting positions. Still, this will be one of the youngest teams in the CFL. Here is a position-by-position breakdown heading into camp:
