The Calgary Stampeders have signed veteran national defensive lineman Jabar Westerman.

    Jabar Westerman
    Defensive lineman
    College: Eastern Michigan
    Height: 6.02
    Weight: 284
    Born: May 13, 1989
    Birthplace: Plantation, FL

The 30-year-old Brampton, Ont., product has 109 regular-season games of Canadian Football League experience with the BC Lions and Montreal Alouettes and has 95 career tackles including 14 tackles for loss as well as 18 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one interception and six knockdowns.

Westerman was BC’s first-round pick (second overall) during the 2012 CFL draft and was the Lions’ nominee and the West Division finalist for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie award in 2012.

Westerman was born in Florida and grew up in Brampton, Ont., after his family moved to Canada in 1999. His older brother Jamaal is a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the siblings were briefly teammates with the Alouettes in 2018. Another brother – Jawann – played football at Rutgers and was signed by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2012.

Plays as a "National" (Canadian), has veteran experience, and is in camp during Calgary's first bye week when there will be an opportunity to work with him and get a good evaluation of his ability to help on a defensive line that sorely needs it.

    What's not to like?

Keep addin' horses to the stable.

    Then harness the right ones...

Is this the BC Westerman or the Winnipeg Westerman? If he's only 30 its prolly the BC brother. Both guys have been in slight decline the last couple years - perhaps Jabar will be good in a rotation alignment - which is what Claybrooks used to deploy, correct?

    On a coaching note aside:
One of the great nuggets of media strategy espoused by the gruff teddy bear known as Cal Murphy was. After any particular, putrid performance resulting in a loss - never talk about the game itself, just focus on the next game.

To illustrate Cal used to answer questions as follows:

Media Mope: Cal, your guys were kinda overwhelmed by the ____________ tonite. What happened?

Cal: Don't know what happened but it won't happen again. We'll be ready next week for _____________ .

    The legacy of Cal Murphy!
