Did the Rifles have a shot even with their best offensive player?

He's free to sign if the 2 sides want it. As good as this kid is, how fair is it to rape a team like the Rifles who are struggling for credibility? They haven't had many winning seasons & are customarily the annual doormats or close to it in the PFC. Signing Carter while great for bragging rights by the Rifles will kill them on the field. There should be a rule saying if a CFL teams signs a junior player while still eligible to play a sizeable financial award has to be paid to the junior club, say $20,000. Carter won't play. He'll sit, no doubt whereas he'd play if he was a Rifle.

I think it does more for the Rifle program to have the Bombers sign him than for him to stay with the Rifles.

They probably get more press this way and he doesn't have to transfer to a CIS program to get noticed. The Lions have been benefiting for years thanks to the junior programs out there, it's time another team does the same.

The junior teams in BC win. The Rifles don't. I think it reflects on just how bad the Rifles organization is... if they use Brett Carter playing for the Bombers as a recruiting tool. Sure, they'll get publicity now but at the end of the season they'll still just win a game or two.

Not all the BC teams win but they use their connections with the Lions as recruiting tools. There's a lot of out of province kids that head to BCFC to play because of things like the Lions Junior Combine and the history of territorial players joining the club at least for training camp. BC brought in 3 this year and there's a shot that 2 of them could make the club.

The Rifles will finish last in the Jr. league whether Carter plays for them or plays for the Bombers. They are now officially bottom-feeders, fielding a team of 12 to 15 legit junior players, the balance of the roster being made up of big kids who look like they can play (although they can't) and some quick kids with limited football fundamentals and discipline. THe board of the Rifles is just a bunch of junior level business cling-ons who know squat about the intricacies of football. The coaching staff is a perennial chase and a revolving door at that. Carter would be a dominant player in a putrid junior program. With the Bombers he could crack the 46 man roster, make some decent coin, learn from some average to above average coaches and potentially be a 15 to 25 catch guy in his first year . . . . certainly breaking all the rookie records set by Jade Etienne!!!

Having had a son who played for them, the Rifles are a sad, sad case. Rife with politics & favouritism.... The best players DID NOT play at a lot of positions. The team lost not because of talent (believe me, Nate...there's more good players on that team than bad)... but because of coaching & personnel decisions. Hoping the new head coach can turn things around but with the culture of that team??? Not going to be easy. Ditching the entire staff from before is a great start but will the same problems that dogged the team go away or come back?? If they lose Brent Carter, that's just going to put them behind the 8 ball even further...
